Switzerland suffers from Ransomware


A small village in Switzerland was attacked by a ransomware virus. The virus targeted servers and the residents' personal data was stolen.




The Swiss city of Rolle, with a population of 6000, has been subjected to a cyber attack targeting the city's servers. The municipality confirmed that the amount of data affected is not large, that is, it is limited.

The attackers did not target servers containing sensitive information, but rather servers containing information about the general population. On the other hand, the attack that took place was a type of large-scale piracy.

What is stolen data?


The stolen data belong to the population and contain:

  • Population names
  • Resident addresses
  • Population dates of birth
  • Social Security numbers
  • Corona infected population

The world witnessed a huge boom in the number of ransomware attacks of various kinds in the first half of this year. A report published by SonicWall for Information Security indicated that the number of attacks in the first half of this year reached 305 million.


The United States, Britain, Germany, South Africa and Brazil, respectively, were the countries most exposed to ransomware attacks during the first half of this year.

A Cyber Attack Targeting America


Suspected Russian hackers gained access to the e-mail of the US Treasury and Commerce Departments, by hacking the American company "Fire Eye" for cyber security, which works in the field of preventing electronic attacks, and the hackers were able to install a malicious program that infected about 18,000 systems in  Company clients.


What is the extent of the electronic penetration?


FireEye announced that 1,800 organizations, including sensitive government agencies, had been affected, and that 50 of them had been "extremely severe".

Among the institutions affected are the US Department of the Treasury, the Departments of Homeland Security and Defense, as well as the US Department of Energy.

The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency issued a warning in a statement, saying that addressing the consequences of the hack would be "extremely complex and difficult".
It described the damage as a "serious threat", as it affected federal agencies, private sector companies and highly sensitive institutions, and put the entire infrastructure at risk.


Who is behind the attack?


Russia is behind the attack.  The US Secretary of State accused Russia of being behind the attack.  Because the Russian government has made repeated attempts to hack into US government networks.
